 Extension related to Cretaceous, middle Tertiary and Holocene events starting with the southern Tethys and evolving into the Mediterranean Libya has five major onshore sedimentary basins, they are:

 Sirt Basin

 Murzuq Basin

 Kufra Basin

 Ghadamis Basin

 Cyrenaica Platform

 Tripolitanian Offshore Basin
