Geography Spatial Analysis of Poverty Levels

in Najaf Governorate 

for the Period (2006-2017)

Abstract

 Poverty phenomenon is considered one of the most serious social problems in society and is explained by a number of it is explained by anumber of demographic and social variables and economic variables, which lead to a decline in the level of living of some social groups and a severe lack in providing their needs. 

  This study aims at identifying the numbers of the poor in the province of najaf as well as the poverty levels In which and the most important variables affecting the variation of these levels in the province for the period 2007_2017. It also represents the concept of poverty, its methods of measurement, its indicators, and analysing the spatial variation of poverty levels in the study area, reaching to solutions to alleviate poverty.

 The basis of the study is spatial variation of the levels of poverty in najaf governorate, and this problem has multiple dimensions that have been identified through the variables set for the study and here comes its importance in clarifying the spatial disparity levels of poverty in najaf governorate, according to administrative units and trying to reach the most important variables leading to those levels, depending on the curriculum descriptive and style(quantitative) statistical in the study of the variables that affect in contrast poverty levels through the use of roads statistical the adoption of the packaqe statistical (Spss) .

  The poverty line , which is the most important method of measuring poverty, has been used to determine the unmber of poor as it is a dividing line between the poor and non-poor . this line has been determined by the central bank for 2012 the cost of this line is estimated at 105,000 dinars \this line identifies the poor and poverty levels cextreme poverty and absolute poverty in the province according to the results of the field study . The researcher used a questionnaire form which was distributed to the sample population of (1522) distributed in the study area by (791) urban forms and (731) rural form to find out the relationship between economic and social variables and their impact on the variation in poverty levels. The most important finding to the study :- 

1- The percentage of poverty in the governorate of Najaf for the period (2007-2017) reached (25%) in 2007 but decreased in 2012 by (8,10%) in 2017 according to the results of the field study ,the percentage increased to (8,22%) this indicates the disparity of poverty in the syudy area as a result of the different levels of unemployment , illiteracy and low in come . 

2- The study found adifference in the levels of ponerty in Najaf Govenorate ,where absolute poverty reached (12%) while extreme poverty reached (10%) . 

3- The study also showed adifference in poverty levels between urben areas (37%) was either rural(63%) or urban poverty (30%) and rural (70%) . 

4- It turned out through statistical analysis variables which lead to the variation poverty levels in the study area that economic variables with the impact of the great in contrast poverty levels .
